Drone Footage Showing Repairs to Middle Bridge and Lake Fork Bridge on US 50 in Colorado

In this video, I discuss what what is being done to repair the US-50 bridges (Middle Bridge and Lake Fork Bridge) following its sudden closure in western Colorado earlier this year. At this point, repairs have been completed for the Middle Bridge. Repairs are expected to be completed for the Lake Fork Bridge in December 2024. Also included in this video is some great drone footage detailing the repair work form a flight that I commissioned and had performed on November 22, 2024.

  1. Although I am an engineer, my only exposure to structural engineering is from college over 4 decades ago. But I wonder if for these repair work they simply used a lower allowable stress. Then the stress calculations from the original design and construction were referred to. Any location where the design stress exceeded the new, lower, allowable stress required augmentation.

I suppose that any detected cracks would simply require normal repairs.

  2. I think the Foresthill Bridge near where I live (near Auburn, CA) also used T1 steel. The County is currently performing magnetic particle testing on the members to find cracking. They started construction on it in 1971 and opened it in 1973.
