Yak4it Tournament of Champions – Lake Fork

I want to thank Cody Prather and Duc Tran for putting on an amazing tournament. I’m very blessed to have gotten the opportunity to fish the Tournament of Champions, with some of the best anglers in the country.

Day 1 started off pretty good for me. I caught two 12.75″ bass, and I thought “well, at least I’m on the board”, and submitted them. They both got rejected because I forgot that in the T.O.C., the minimum length was 14″. Now I’m back to having no fish. I was getting bit most of the day and ended up brining in around 6, but I didn’t have anything over 14″. I had about 2 hrs left of fishing with 0 bass, so I decided to start chucking my big glide bait. On my 5th cast or so, I got thumped, and I started reeling in like a mad man. As I was reeling, I’m yelling, “THIS IS MY FIRST SWIMBAIT BASS!” I was pretty excited. It ended up being 5.09 lbs. I finished the day with 2 bass, the 2nd being 15.75″.

Day 2 I decided that I wanted to swing for the fences, and try some things that I’ve never tried before. I started off by throwing a fluke and got 2 bites, but I pulled the bait right out of their mouths on the hooksets. I moved to another area and decided to throw some top water. 10 mins in, I get surprised by a bass right by the yak that comes up and slurps it. I set the hook and start reeling in and get the bass in the net. BOOM, my first top water bass ever. Two days and two firsts for me. It ended up being a 19″ bass and my only bass of the day.

I finished in 31st out of 89 anglers. I didn’t show up as well as I hoped or that I felt like I could, but I still enjoyed the opportunity to fish against these talented anglers. I want to thank Mariner Sails for helping me pick out my perfect kayak and get it set up the way I wanted it. They are so nice and the staff is amazing. I want to thank Fun n Sun Boat Sales for helping me get my rods and reels set up to fish this tournament. 1. Great video Chris; I really enjoy watching them. Question for you, do you use the swivel hooks to avoid some line twist when fishing drop shot?
