Mini Underspin + Early Spring Tricks For Big Bass!

Get ready for a 31+ lb limit of bass with a spinning rod! Come along for an awesome day on the water! Matt is searching for prespawn bass that are moving into the shallows but what he finds is staging fish that are ready to eat! This is an action packed day full of big fish on light tackle!

Typically when we catch 30+ lbs we do it with a swimbait. Today all but 2 of the fish were caught on spinning rods with a mini underspin and a mid strolling bait. These fish were fired up and ready to feed but it took 3 hours for Matt to figure it out. Reading the conditions and being willing to adapt are critical elements of success on the water!

Below you’ll find links to the exact baits and gear Matt used throughout the day. We’ve included the exact colors and sizes for the baits, along with the exact rod and reel combos. All the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

  1. Hello Matt, Mike Harris here. I ran into you at Grasshopper late today (Monday, March 4). I had the old yellow Ranger that had the motor painted yellow. Just wanted you to know i got on, off the water and home safely. The old girl still runs just fine and the trailer got me there and back safely from Varnell, GA. I know my FIL was smiling down from above. That old man was the best smallmouth angler I had ever been around. Thanks for talking a minute to speak. I know everyone wants some of your time everywhere you go. Enjoy your videos very much.

  2. The underspin is a great lure any time the water is below 50 degrees. I live in PA and I catch fish on an underspin until the lakes freeze and again starting the day the ice gets off the lake. The big difference here is Bass are moving shallow before the ice goes off. This is due to the yellow perch start to move shallow to spawn while the ice is melting. 53 and rising in the early spring is buzz bait time! What you are doing is more like what works in 40 degree water in late fall. I assume the difference is do to the forage base.

  3. When you fish an underspin using braid to fluorocarbon leader, typically how long of a leader do you use? It appears you are fishing fairly decent depths. Thanks and ALWAYS enjoy the vids!

  4. I've got the 7'1" MFS Steez spinning rod and I throw small swimbaits on it. However, it's a little stiffer than I expected it to me for a "medium" action rod. Too stiff for dropshot fishing imo
